The ocean is the lifeblood of our planet, providing half of the oxygen we breathe, regulating the climate and feeding billions globally. Understanding its critical role in our society and economy is a cornerstone of ocean literacy. In this video, explore what ocean literacy means, why it matters and what factors can inspire behavioural change and meaningful action to protect our ocean. Drawing on insights from a global survey of young people across 35 countries, the video features interviews with three leading experts:

  • Brigitta Maria Andrea Gunawan, founder, 30×30 Indonesia
  • Emma McKinley, senior research fellow, Cardiff University and the Marine Social Science Network
  • Peter Thomson, United Nations Secretary – General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean
